Evaluation of Anemia in Pediatric Population in the Era of Molecular Diagnosis
This presentation focuses on the role of molecular tests in the diagnostic workup of anemias in pediatric practice. The panel discussion will highlight the importance of collaboration between the clinical and laboratory teams investigating causes of anemia, both common and rare, as well as benefits and potential drawbacks of novel diagnostic modalities.
Dr. Archana Mishra Agarwal is a medical director of hematopathology and special hematology, and she is professor (clinical) with the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah. Dr. Agarwal obtained her medical degree from Assam Medical College. She then completed her anatomic and clinical pathology residency, a fellowship in hematopathology, and a molecular genetic pathology fellowship, all at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Agarwal is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, hematology, and molecular genetic pathology. Her research interests include red cell enzymopathies, hemoglobinopathies, and molecular hematopathology.

Dr. Anton Rets is a medical director of hematopathology at ARUP Laboratories and an associate professor (clinical) with the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah. Dr. Rets received a doctorate degree in pathology from Perm State Medical Academy/St. Petersburg Academy of Postgraduate Medical Education. He then earned his medical degree and completed a pathology residency at Perm State Medical Academy. He also completed an anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University before completing a hematopathology fellowship at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Rets is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and hematopathology. He has received several awards, including the Joseph A. Knight Award for Excellence in Education, the Outstanding Teaching Award in Clinical Pathology, Excellence in Leadership Award, and the Outstanding Academic Performance Federal Award. His research interests include red blood cell disorders, mast cell disorders, nonneoplastic hematology, and digital microscopy.
Panelists
Dr. Sasidhar Goteti received his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine, completed his Pediatric residency at Golisano Children’s Hospital at SUNY Upstate Medical University, where he also served as a chief resident, and his Hematology-Oncology Fellowship at Oregon Health and Science University.
Dr. Goteti is an assistant professor in the division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT with the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah. His clinical interests are hemoglobinopathies, immune hematology, bone marrow failure syndromes, and platelet disorders. He serves as the institutional lead in sickle cell disease and thalassemia. He is the site PI for the Pacific Sickle Cell Regional Collaborative (PSCRC) and the Globin Regional Data and Discovery (GRANDaD) studies. He leads multiple quality improvement initiatives and recently received the American Society of Hematology Quality Improvement Training Initiative award.
Dr. Jessica Meznarich received her medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. She then completed her residency in Pediatrics and fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the University of Utah/Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.
She joined the faculty of the University of Utah in 2016, where she is currently an associate professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. Her clinical and research interests are in nonmalignant hematology, bleeding disorders, thrombosis and clotting disorders, and hemoglobinopathies including thalassemia and sickle cell disease.
