FNA of Basaloid Neoplasms of the Head and Neck: A Case-Based Approach

A case based presentation will be used to discuss the differential diagnosis of basaloid head and neck tumors. Particular emphasis will be placed on salivary gland tumors and HPV-associated carcinomas.

Dr. Krane joined the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in June 2019 as a Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and the Director of the Cytopathology fellowship program. Previously, he was at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston for 26 years where he served as the Associate Director of Cytology and the Chief of Head and Neck Pathology. Dr. Krane has broad interests in neoplasia of the head and neck region. Particular areas of research interest are in salivary gland and thyroid cytopathology and HPV-associated malignancy of the head and neck region. Dr. Krane is a former member of the Executive Board of the American Society of Cytopathology and is currently an Associate Editor of Cancer Cytopathology. He has co-authored/contributed to several books including The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology and The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology.

Objectives

After this presentation, participants will be able to:

Describe differential diagnosis of basaloid salivary gland tumors and how to resolve diagnostic uncertainty associated with these tumors
Discuss the significance of HPV infection in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas arising from the oropharynx
Apply the CAP guidelines for HPV testing of head and neck carcinomas
