NIFTP and the Updated Bethesda System for Thyroid FNA

This presentation will discuss the development and underlying rationale for developing the terminology of non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP). Criteria for recognizing NIFTP in surgical pathology will be discussed as will the implications for NIFTP for thyroid FNA. Updates to the second edition of The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC) will be discussed including the impact of the NIFTP terminology.

Dr. Krane joined the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in June 2019 as a Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and the Director of the Cytopathology fellowship program. Previously, he was at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston for 26 years where he served as the Associate Director of Cytology and the Chief of Head and Neck Pathology. Dr. Krane has broad interests in neoplasia of the head and neck region. Particular areas of research interest are in salivary gland and thyroid cytopathology and HPV-associated malignancy of the head and neck region. Dr. Krane is a former member of the Executive Board of the American Society of Cytopathology and is currently an Associate Editor of Cancer Cytopathology. He has co-authored/contributed to several books including The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology and The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology.
