Cytology and Histology of Salivary Gland Tumors

The salivary gland can give rise to a diverse array of both benign and malignant tumors. Many of these entities present diagnostic challenges, with frequent morphologic and immunohistochemical overlap between different tumors. This talk will cover cytology and resection specimens from several primary salivary gland epithelial tumors encountered at the University of Utah.

Objectives

After this presentation, participants will be able to:

Recognize key cytologic findings for common benign and malignant salivary gland tumors
Recognize key histologic and immunohistochemical characteristics for common malignant salivary gland tumors
Discuss which salivary gland sites typically give rise to the above tumors
Identify which malignancies are typically low grade, high grade, or variable grade
