Transfusion Medicine Basics Series
Transfusion Reaction Work-Up Plus Hemolytic, Febrile, and Allergic Transfusion Reactions

Transfusion reactions are common and underreported. This presentation reviews the current defined transfusion reactions, and what happens when a transfusion reaction is reported to the transfusion medicine/blood bank service. The presentation also covers the basics of what physicians, nurses, and trainees should consider for initial workups when signs or symptoms develop during or after a transfusion. The most common transfusion reactions, including allergic and febrile nonhemolytic events, are discussed and placed in clinical vignettes for relevance.
