Infectious Pathogen Screening in Blood Donation


This lecture reviews the history and current practices of infectious pathogen screening in blood donation. It covers donor risk assessment, serologic and nucleic acid testing, and targeted safety strategies for major transfusion-transmissible pathogens. Screening approaches are discussed to illustrate how pathogen biology, geographic and seasonal risks, recipient vulnerability, and blood component characteristics guide the selection of appropriate blood product safety measures.
