Course Focus: Genitourinary Pathology and Neuropathology
Overview
This year’s Anatomic Pathology Update will focus on recent advances in the fields of genitourinary pathology and neuropathology. The conference aim is to provide a course covering the most recent recommendations and practice guidelines and a space to further refine overall diagnostic skills for general practice pathologists.
We are delighted to announce our distinguished keynote speakers will be Dr. Sean Williamson, vice-chair for Education, Department of Pathology and director of the Division of Genitourinary Pathology at the Cleveland Clinic, and Dr. Arie Perry, Professor of Pathology and Neurological Surgery and Director of Neuropathology at the University of California, San Francisco. Our keynote speakers will discuss important advances in genitourinary pathology and neuropathology, including important updates in molecular pathology.
Additionally, the course will feature presentations from University of Utah and ARUP Laboratories faculty who specialize in genitourinary pathology and neuropathology. Given the breadth of these topics, we will also hear from lecturers with expertise in pediatric pathology, molecular pathology, breast pathology, renal pathology, cardiac pathology, and hematopathology.

Keynote Speakers
![]() | Arie Perry, MDProfessor of Pathology and Neurological Surgery; Director of Neuropathology; Director of Neuropathology Fellowship Training Program, University of California, San Francisco Arie Perry, MD, is a professor of Pathology and Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, where he serves as the director of Neuropathology. He received his MD and residency training at UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas, followed by surgical pathology, neuropathology, and molecular cytogenetics research fellowships at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he worked closely with his mentor, the late Dr. Bernd Scheithauer. His interests have focused mostly on classification, grading, and molecular characterization of both adult and pediatric brain tumors. He has authored over 700 publications and participated as an expert editor for the revised 4th, 5th, and 6th editions of the WHO CNS tumor classification schemes as well as an author for several other WHO Blue Books. He has also previously served as a chief editor for Brain Pathology (official journal of the International Society of Neuropathology), the Practical Surgical Neuropathology textbook (two editions), and Greenfield’s Neuropathology (two editions). Dr. Perry maintains an active consult service and is a frequently invited lecturer. He also enjoys creative modes of teaching making use of his longstanding passion for music. In this respect, he has been featured in several media stories for using "neuropathology songs" in medical education, including CD recordings and YouTube videos. |

Williamson, MDProfessor of Pathology, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine; Vice Chair, Education, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Diagnostics Institute Sean R. Williamson, MD, is the vice chair of Education in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Diagnostics Institute. He is also a professor of Pathology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he studied medicine at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, followed by residency and genitourinary pathology fellowship training at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis. Prior to joining the Cleveland Clinic, he practiced in the Henry Ford Health System in the Detroit Metro area, where he was selected by the trainees as the Anatomic Pathology Teacher of the Year four times. He is currently editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Surgical Pathology. He has contributed to more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and is coauthor of a textbook Atlas of Genitourinary Pathology: A Pattern Based Approach. He is a lead author for multiple sections (urinary bladder, kidney, and mesenchymal tumors) in the 5th edition of the World Health Organization Classification of tumors of the urinary system and is a coauthor of the chapter on tumors of the testis and paratesticular structures in the 5th series of the AFIP Atlas of Tumor Pathology. He currently serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including Modern Pathology and Histopathology, and is the recipient of the 2024 Arthur Purdy Stout Society Annual Prize. His research is focused on diagnostic, prognostic, and staging challenges in surgical pathology, with emphasis on recognizing novel tumor histologic features that correlate with underlying molecular events and significance for patient outcome. |

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Georgia and received her medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. She completed her residency in neuropathology and a fellowship in anatomic pathology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and a fellowship in forensic pathology at Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Dr. Kohler-Skinner is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology, neuropathology, and forensic pathology. Her research interests include glial tumors and central nervous system trauma. |
![]() | Ana Lucia Ruano, MDAssistant Professor (Clinical), Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah; Pathologist, ARUP Laboratories Dr. Ana Lucia Ruano is a medical director of breast pathology and molecular oncology at ARUP Laboratories and an assistant professor (clinical) at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah. Dr. Ruano graduated from the Universida Franciso Marroquin with her medical degree. She completed an anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the Cleveland Clinic, as well as fellowships in pediatric pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine, hematopathology at the Cleveland Clinic, and surgical pathology at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Dr. Ruano is certified by the American Board of Pathology. She specializes in breast pathology and molecular oncology PDL-1 testing. |

![]() | Daniel Albertson, MDProfessor (Clinical), Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah; President, University Business Unit, ARUP Laboratories; Division Chief, Anatomic Pathology and Molecular Oncology, ARUP Laboratories and Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah Dr. Daniel Albertson is the president of the University Business Unit at ARUP and division chief for Anatomic Pathology and Molecular Oncology at the University of Utah and ARUP Laboratories. He is also a professor (clinical) at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Albertson received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska. Following medical school, Dr. Albertson completed an anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Creighton University and a surgical pathology fellowship at the University of Utah. He has received several awards, including the Hal Lankford Pathology Resident Award in 2011, the Outstanding Teaching Award in Anatomic Pathology in 2017, and the Joe Holden Award for Clinical Excellence in Anatomic Pathology in 2018. His research interests include oncologic genitourinary and gynecologic pathology, solid tumor fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) pathology, and applications of digital pathology. |

He received a medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine and a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology and a fellowship in cytopathology from the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Balatico is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology. He received a Resident Teaching Award in 2021 and the Lester Corser Humanitarian Award in 2020. His research interests include breast pathology and genitourinary pathology. |

Coleman serves as a medical director of molecular oncology at ARUP Laboratories and an assistant professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Coleman received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and then completed an anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Cleveland Clinic. Following residency, Dr. Coleman completed a hematopathology fellowship at the University of New Mexico and a molecular genetic pathology fellowship at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, hematology, and molecular genetic pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Dr. Coleman has received the Clinical Pathology Resident Education of the Year award. He specializes in cancer genomics, bioinformatics, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and his research interests include the application of bioinformatic technologies, data science, and machine learning in molecular genetic pathology. |

Jensen, MD, PhDProfessor, Neurosurgery, and Adjunct Professor in Oncological Sciences and Radiation Oncology, Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah; Principal Investigator, Huntsman Cancer Institute Dr. Randy Jensen received his medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine and completed a residency in neurosurgery at Loyola University of Chicago. He specializes in neurosurgery, brain tumors, skull base surgery, neuro trauma, and neurocritical care. He has a particular emphasis using preoperative imaging, intraoperative navigation, intraoperative cortical mapping, and intraoperative MRI to maximize tumor resection and minimize surgical complications. He treats patients with malignant, benign, and metastatic brain tumors. He has many clinical trials for patients with brain tumors and has a laboratory effort examining brain tumor biology. He is also a member of the Brain Tumor Research Team at Huntsman Cancer Institute. He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. |

![]() | Qinwen Mao, MD, PhDProfessor, Neuropathology, Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah; Director, Neuropathology, ARUP Laboratories and University of Utah Dr. Qinwen Mao is a professor at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah and the director of neuropathology at ARUP Laboratories and the University of Utah. Dr. Mao graduated with a medical degree from the Fourth Military Medical University in China. She also received her doctorate in physiology and a Master of Science degree in histology from that institution. Dr. Mao completed a pathology residency and a neuropathology fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She served as a faculty member of neuropathology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. She is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology and neuropathology. Her research interests include the pathogenesis and management of Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal lobar degeneration, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and biomarker development for dementia. |

Menon, MD, PhD, FCAP, FASCPAssociate Professor, Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah; Head of Clinical Operations for Hematopathology, ARUP Laboratories Dr. Madhu P. Menon is the head of clinical operations for Hematopathology at ARUP Laboratories and an associate professor of pathology at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah. Dr. Menon obtained his medical degree from Baroda Medical College, Maharaja Sayajirao University, and a doctorate degree in molecular medicine from the Huck Institute of Life Sciences, Pennsylvania State University. He then completed his anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and a hematopathology fellowship from the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute with visiting fellowships at George Washington University Hospital and Johns Hopkins University Hospital, as well as a postdoctoral fellowship in erythropoietin signaling at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute. Dr. Menon is board certified in hematopathology, and anatomic and clinical pathology. He also has a Lean Silver Certification, LEAN training for healthcare leaders. His research interests include diagnostic and prognostic markers in lymphomas and leukemias, molecular characterization of lymphomas and leukemias, and biomarkers for early detection of progression and transformation of low-grade lymphomas. |
![]() | Umang Swami, MD, MSCI, FASCOAssociate Professor, Internal Medicine, Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah; Oncologist, Huntsman Cancer Institute Dr. Umang Swami is an associate professor in the Division of Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, at Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah. He serves as section leader for the Genitourinary Disease Group within the Division of Oncology and leads the Genitourinary Clinical Trials Research Group. Dr. Swami earned his medical degree from Sawai Man Singh Medical College in India. He subsequently served as a visiting scientist at the Montefiore-Einstein Cancer Center in New York, where he contributed to Phase I studies evaluating novel drugs and treatment regimens for patients with refractory or advanced solid tumors. He completed his residency in internal medicine at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York, followed by a hematology-oncology fellowship and a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation from the University of Iowa College of Public Health. He has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO). Dr. Swami has authored more than 175 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and has presented his work at leading international conferences, including ASCO, AACR, and ASBMT. He serves as a reviewer and editor for multiple journals and is an active member of several professional societies, including ASCO, AACR, ESMO, and SITC. He is a member of the NCCN Guidelines Panel for Bladder and Penile Cancers and serves on several ASCO guideline panels, including those for systemic melanoma therapy, management of immune-related adverse events, germline genetic testing, cell-free DNA, and the Multi-Site Guideline Advisory Group. Dr. Swami is a medical oncologist specializing in the care of patients with genitourinary cancers and is deeply committed to mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows pursuing careers in oncology research. |

She received her medical and doctorate degrees from the Yale School of Medicine and completed a residency in anatomic pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard School of Medicine. She completed fellowships in molecular genetic pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine and in genitourinary pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard School of Medicine. Dr. Williams is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology and molecular genetic pathology. She is a member of the United States and Canada Academy of Pathology and the Association for Molecular Pathology. Her research interests include molecular and immunohistochemical signatures of neuroendocrine and neuroectodermal tumors of the genitourinary system and epigenetic mechanisms of nuclear stability and chromatin functionality. |
